Goals of a Project Excel Mentor:

The goal of a Project Excel Mentor is to provide student scholars (grades 5 - 12) with a positive environment and relationship that encourages and further develops the student's well-being, self-efficacy, motivation, acceptance, and inclusion through mentor-based facilitation of academic and, academic-related, personal goal development and achievement with the matched student. The time commitment for mentors is approximately 1 - 2 hours per week, plus attendance at the Project Excel monthly general meeting (1.5 - 2 hours) for a total of approximately 5. 5 - 10 hours per month. Travel is dependent on activity.

Project Excel Mentor Expectations:

Weekly face-to-face meeting with mentee at their home, local college/university activities, community events, and/or public places (e.g. libraries, community centers, parks, movie theaters, malls) for approximately 1-2 hours.
  • Weekly contact with mentee via phone or email.
  • Complete and submit biweekly contact logs to the Project Excel office, Faculty Project Coordinator or Transfer Achievement Office as indicated below.
  • Attend, and encourage mentee attendance at, Project Excel monthly general meeting.
  • Encourage mentee participation in Project Excel, community events/activities, and/or university/college-related activities targeting the mentee's specific age/grade group.
Basic Guidelines for a Successful MENTORING Relationship
  1. Be Proactive - don't wait for your mentor or protégé to contact you
  2. Negotiate a commitment - agree to have regular contact at pre-defined intervals
  3. Establish rapport - learn as much as you can about one another
  4. Be confident - each of you has something important to offer the other
  5. Be enthusiastic - demonstrate your interest in the mentoring relationship
  6. Communicate - share your knowledge and experience openly
  7. Be a good listener - hear what your mentor or protégé is saying to you
  8. Be responsive - act upon what you have learned
  9. Be accessible - have an open-door, open-phone policy
  10. Take responsibility - it takes two to have a successful mentoring relationship

Mentor Leadership Opportunity

Once a mentor has successfully completed at least one semester of mentoring they may request a leadership position with Project Excel. For more information on this opportunity contact the main office at (805) 617-4588.
  • Meet or contact mentors monthly. Plan quarterly mentor events. Make weekly and monthly calls, send emails, etc.
  • Complete and turn in monthly logs to mentor coordinator (if available) or to the program director.
  • Participate in any monthly Project Excel programs or events.
  • Encourage mentors to get mentees involved in College or University activities.
  • Monitor/support the progress of mentees.
  • Perform duties of coordinator if none available and report directly to program director.
  • Arrange for transportation of mentors, tutors and student scholars when needed.
To be eligible for Mentor Leader position a mentor must complete our Mentoring Class (UCSB) and our Personal Development Workshop (FC). This is a paid position.
